PUNE: A 15-year-old girl, who was allegedly abducted by a 20-year-old youth on the pretext of marriage, died on May 24 after giving birth to a stillborn baby at her parents' house in Undri.
The Chatushrungi police have booked the suspect, identified as Vicki Rajeshwar Devkar, and his two relatives under sections 376 (rape), 304 (a) (causing death by negligence), 366 (kidnapping woman to compel her for marriage), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. All the suspects are from Solapur. The victim's mother has lodged a complaint in this regard.
Police sub-inspector Pratap Bahure, who is investigating the case, told TOI that the complainant, the victim's mother, and Devkar were construction labourers. The girl met Devkar at a construction site in Pashan in August 2011. "He abducted the girl and later forced her to marry him," he said.
Bahure said Devkar then took the victim to his native place in Solapur. They were staying in a slum there. "When the victim got pregnant, Devkar called her parents over. In March, the complainant and her husband went to bring their daughter back.
When the victim's parents reached Solapur, they were thrashed by Devkar and his relatives, who also threatened to kill them."
He said that on May 24, the victim gave birth to a stillborn baby at her parents' house in Undri and died following some complications. "We are yet to arrest the suspect," Bahure added.
