Of late, I have been witnessing a very disturbing increase in the crime against females, be a girl child, a teenager, or an adult woman. It has almost become the order of the day. Newspapers are replete with such news. No doubt, India has been placed at parity with Afghanistan as the worst countries for a female to born in. Sometimes, I guess, had it been there in the past too but very less reported?.. or the mind set of the Indian male is becoming less human, devoid of any compassion and respect for the other gender, and is also becoming fearless of the Indian Law!
So, I fancied an idea to let the world know the dark side of "Being a Female in India."
Let there be the consciences shaken, people of all walks do some soul searching..take a pause and raise their voice, wherever they are, against the atrocities being meted out to girls and women, with a result that cruelity against the female gender starts receding, and we give to our generations to come a society where a woman is respected in its true essence-as as wife, as a sister, as a mother, as a grand mother et al..is the sole objective of this blog.
Amen.

Hooghly teen raped, murdered TNN | Jul 25, 2012, 03.55AM IST

HARIPAL (HOOGHLY): A teenaged was found raped and murdered in a jute field in Basari village under Haripal police station area on Tuesday afternoon. The father of the girl has alleged that the brother of a CPM panchayat member was behind the crime. Villagers staged an agitation and didn't allow the body of the 15-year-old to be taken away for autopsy, till the police brought sniffer dogs. A case of rape and murder has been registered.
The parents of the deceased are farm labourers and leave home early. "On Tuesday morning, they had left for Sodepur on work. The victim was alone at home. When her father returned home in the afternoon, he couldn't find the girl. When he asked his neighbours they said that the victim was last spotted near a village pond with utensils. Her father rushed to the pond to find the utensils lying, but there was no trace of the girl," said sources.
By then, some other villagers had gathered and one of them asked the victim's father to check the toilet near a jute field, close to the pond. "As soon as the villagers entered the field, they stumbled upon the girl's body. The girl, wearing a nightie, was lying face down in the field. Bantul raised an alarm and other villagers gathered at the spot.
Policemen also reached the spot after being informed by the locals, but were not allowed to get close to the body till the dog squad arrived," said sources.
"I suspect that this crime was committed by the brother of a Gopinathpur gram panchayatmember, which is run by the CPM. This man was after my daughter for long. He came to our village even on Monday evening but we got together and drove him out," alleged the girl's father.
According to Aduri's aunt Shyamali, the accused is a terror in the area and was after her daughter. "The situation turned so bad that I had to send my daughter away from the village," she said.
After the police faced resistance, Chandernagore SDPO Saikat Ghosh went to the village. SomeTrinamool Congress leaders also reached the spot. "The CPM may have lost in the polls , but the party is still terrorizing this area. We demand immediate arrest of the accused," said local Trinamool leader Laltu De. Basab Talukdar, Special IG, Burdwan Range, said that prima facie it seems that the girl was raped. "She was bleeding from her private parts. We suspect rape. Nobody will be spared," he said.
Crime in Hooghly is on the rise in recent times. On Monday evening, the body of a Class-VI student was found by the side of Delhi Road near Srirapur. Md Ismail, a student of Anjuman High School and resident of R K Road in Srirampur left home in the evening with three other youngsters. According to Rajnarayan Mukherjee, SDPO, Srirampur, the trio asked Ismail to join them for fishing at a local pond.
"After being arrested on Monday night, the three admitted that they had thrashed Ismail as his family owed them Rs 4,000. The boy apparently got throttled when the three grabbed him by the throat," Mukherjee said.

Youth 'sets ablaze' Kurla girl, booked V Narayan | Jul 25, 2012, 01.16AM IST

MUMBAI: A 26-year-old youth, Devendra Bansode, has been booked for allegedly setting ablaze a 23-year-old girl, Priyanka Kamble, at her fifth-floor flat in an SRA building in Kurla. Kamble suffered 90% burns while the accused suffered 50% burns.
Investigators learnt through the locals that Bansode was having an illicit relationship with Kamble and the matter worsened around 1.30am on Tuesday after his visits at the victim's flat. "Bansode frequently visited the victim's flat after her father passed away. The victim and her mother considered him as a family member. However he was having an illicit relationship with the girl and her mother too," people from the locality said.
The incident occurred half-an-hour after Bansode stepped into Kamble's flat situated on the fifth floor. On seeing Bansode, Kamble's mother stepped out of the house and stayed in the common passage on the floor.
"In the complaint, Kamble's mother Nirmala said that Bansode has set her daughter on fire. Meanwhile Bansode claimed that he suffered the burns when he tried to save her who poured kerosene in front of him and lit match-stick," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone V) Dhananjay Kulkarni.
The matter was observed when the victim's mother found smoke emitting from her flat and the next moment heard her daughter's scream. "On hearing the scream, neighbours rushed out and entered Kamble's flat after breaking the door and found Kamble was burnt while Bansode was found hiding to a corner. They manhandled the half burnt Bansode. Somehow he managed to give a slip," said a Kurla police officer.
The officer said Bansode called one of his friends for help and drove to hospitals in the locality but the officials denied him admission as it was a burn case. "Bansode returned back to the building premise where the victim stays. People took him along with Kamble in a taxi to the Sion hospital," said the officer.
Bansode is booked under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder). Investigations are on.

MADDUR: A 19-year-old girl who resisted a molestation attempt by a group of youths was kicked out of a moving train by them near Maddur on Tuesday afternoon. She survived miraculously, but suffered grievous injuries.

Kavya (name changed) was pushed out of theYeshwantpur-Mysore Express when it was travelling over the Kolli bridge, on the Shimsha river. She fell onto the dry river bed 25 feet below.

A passenger who saw the girl being thrown out called Maddur police. She was taken to theMandya Institute of Medical Sciences, where she is being treated for injuries to the head, backbone and legs.

Scores of passengers who remained mute spectators to the molestation attempt later thrashed the culprits. Two youths were taken into custody at the Mandya station. Two others were picked up at Pandavapura later on suspicion of accompanying those caught earlier.

Kavya said from her hospital bed: "When the train was approaching Maddur station, four youths began teasing me and sexually harassing me. They passed lewd remarks and tried to molest me. When I said I would inform police, they pushed me out."

An employee of a garment factory in Bangalore, Kavya was on leave. She was heading back to her home in Vidyaranyapuram, Mysore. An orphan, she stays with her grandmother in Mysore.

Kavya boarded the general compartment at Kengeri. The four youths, who are believed to have entered the coach at Ramanagaram, began teasing her.

When Kavya rebuked them, one of the youths tried to molest her.

She got up from her seat and went near the door. The youths followed her and continued to misbehave. They pushed her out when she said she would inform police.

As the train had just left Maddur, it was moving at a slow speed on the bridge.

Police said Kavya might not have survived if she had hit a rock on the river bank. Luckily, she fell on the dry river bed.

A passenger said the youths literally kicked her out. Another passenger claimed: "If she had brought it to our notice, we could have done something."

The miscreants were identified as Akbar, 24, Imran, 21, Shuban and Ahmed — all from Kalyanagiri locality in Mysore.

Victimspeak

I am a tailor at the Hinduja Garments factory in Bangalore. I was going to my home town, Mysore. When the train was approaching Maddur station, four youths began teasing me and sexually harassing me. We need no gender assessment study to state that women find life outside their homes increasingly unsafe. Commuting on buses and trains is fraught with risks too, not to talk of general discomfort, thanks to overcrowding and lack of facilities. This case is more shocking because it brings to light the deteriorating social climate in Karnataka where hooligans can dare commit such heinous acts. What's worrisome for citizens is the government -- whose members are constantly squabbling over positions of power -- seems to be in no hurry to wake up to realities. Along with policy-makers, law-enforcers too have a big job on their hands in creating a citizenfriendly society.

Now, woman raped inside police station in Kushinagar district TNN | Jul 24, 2012, 03.31AM IST

LUCKNOW: Yet another woman has accused a police officer and a village chowkidar of raping her inside a police station in Kushinagar. The victim's medical examination has confirmed rape. A case of rape and assault has been lodged against the two accused who are absconding.
Recently, a sub-inspector posted at Maal police station on city's outskirts was arrested on charges of raping a woman inside the police station while a similar allegation was made against an SI in Sitapur. In Sitapur, the district police chief came to the rescue of the accused SI and eventually the victim herself was charged with lodging a false complaint.
In Kushinagar, a middle aged resident of Gaunahi village under Khadda police station was allegedly raped by a village chowkidaar and sub-inspector of the same police station on July 17. The village chowkidar Vijay Verma took the victim, aged around 35 years, to meet sub-inspectorVirendra Kumar on the pretext of arranging a job of woman village chowkidar for her.
The victim, whose husband is a labourer and works outside UP, stays with her in-laws.
At the police station, the woman was made to consume liquor. Thereafter, she was first raped by the chowikdar and then by the S-I on July 17. The woman claims to have been knocked off unconscious.
Later, the victim managed to flee from the police station and told her in-laws about the incident. She also informed her husband about the incident who rushed to Kushinagar. The family then tried to lodge a police complaint but was turned away by the cops. It was only after the incident came in the media on Sunday, the complaint was filed at the instance of circle officer Vinod Kumar. The victim was sent for the medical examination.
Though senior officers had learnt that woman's charges were true, they waited for her medical report to lodge a case of gangrape against the two accused. The victim has been admitted to the district hospital where she is undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, theaccused S-I along with five other cops who were present at the police station at the time of inicdent have been suspended
ADG Crime Jagmohan Yadav has directed IG Gorakhpur Bhavesh Kumar to visit the crime scene and the victim and initiate early arrest of the accused. Shortly after the incident came to light on Sunday, the accused SI proceeded on emergency leave and is untraceable since then. Senior officers have assured security for the victim and her family in case there were complaints of any threat to them from the accused.

Loan agents whisk away woman in car Sumati Yengkhom, TNN | Jul 24, 2012, 03.30AM IST

KOLKATA: A 43-year-old woman was last month abducted by car loan recovery agents in broad daylight from BT Road, driven to a garage in Bhadreshwar, Hooghly, and left locked up inside although she had technically not defaulted on her loan. She had to be rescued by Bhadreshwar police hours later. While the incident happened on June 12 and the FIR lodged with Baranagar police the following day, police allegedly took no action for 38 days. The charges slapped against the accused were so weak that all of them surrendered and walked free on bail last Friday. The victim has now decided to approach the state women's commission.

Mala Mazumdar was on her way back home after collecting admission forms for her daughter from Jaipuria College when three men on motorcycles intercepted her car and forced it to stop near Palpara on BT Road, barely 200 metres from the Baranagar PS. The men asked Mala and her driver to get off the car since they had orders to take it away.

As per a Supreme Court directive, such "reposession" can be done only on a court-appointed receiver's order with prior intimation to the police and the owner of the vehicle.

Mala told the agents that she had talked to the bank to make a one-time settlement by June 25, but the agents refused to pay heed. She claimed they first tried to drag her out of the car. When she screamed, one of them pushed the driver aside, got into the car and began driving it at breakneck speed further north towards Dakshineshwar.

Mala first called her husband, a diabetes patient who stays at home, and told him that she was being kidnapped. When the car stopped at the Vivekananda bridge toll booth, she tried to draw the attention of the toll plaza staff. The guards there asked the driver to pull over the car but he sped away. On Durgapur Expressway, the agents first tried to force her out and when they could not, they drove the car into a garage, locked it and left. Realizing she was somewhere in Bhadreshwar, Mala called up a family friend who informed the police. An hour later she was rescued. Police told her to lodge a complaint in Baranagar.

In the FIR lodged with the Baranagar police, Mala claimed she had bought the car, a Maruti Alto, in 2007. She had initially taken a loan of Rs 2.8 lakh from a private bank for four years. After paying EMIs for two and a half years, she first defaulted. Following an offer from another private bank, she transferred the remaining loan of Rs 1.8 lakh and paid five instalments of Rs 6,501 per month. She then reached a one-time settlement of Rs 95,000 that was to be paid by June 25, 2012.

The FIR was lodged under section 323 IPC (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 IPC (criminal intimidation) and 534 IPC (assault or criminal force to a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty) — all bailable charges. Additional DCP (Barrackpore) Biswajit Ghosh said, "The charges of police not responding in time doesn't arise, because the complaint was lodged immediately."

In 2007, the Supreme Court had in a landmark judgment laid the rules for vehicle reposession during default. It had observed: "The recovery of loans or seizure of vehicles could be done only through legal means. The banks cannot employ goondas to take possession by force."

Caste panchayat strips, thrashes woman, lover TNN | Jul 23, 2012, 02.14AM IST

JAIPUR: A married woman and her paramour were tied to a tree, stripped half-naked and severely beaten up for nearly three hours before a crowd of 1,000 people under orders of a caste panchayat at Sarada area in Udaipur district on Sunday. The two were 'punished' for having illicit relations, said sources.
The woman's husband himself stripped the woman and the youth. Later their hair was cut. When a police team tried to intervene, the villagers hurled stones at them, injuring two cops. Acting fearlessly, the panchayat continued to discuss other penalties on the couple till late evening. Later the police rescued them and took them to Sarada police station.
Sensing the seriousness of the matter, National Commission for Women chairperson Mamta Sharma said that she would send a team to the village on Monday to look into the incident.
According to the police, 27-year-old Prakash Meena had an illicit relationship with a 22-year-old woman living in the neighbourhood. "She is a distant relative of his. While Prakash works as a labourer in the village, the woman's husband was staying in Ahmedabad for the past few years. The woman has a three-year old daughter," said SP, Udaipur, Hari Prasad Sharma.
The officer said that Prakash and the woman had fled from the village a fortnight ago. "The villagers were looking for the couple and they found them near Keshiriyaji area in Udaipur on Saturday evening," said the officer.
The villagers brought them back and kept them confined throughout the night. "A panchayat was called on Sunday morning in which the woman's husband and her in-laws were present. They were demanding action against the couple," said the officer.
The villagers and half-a-dozen panchayat leaders gathered around 9.30 am. Soon, Prakash and woman were tied to a tree.
Woman's husband Hamji Meena stripped her and the youth in front of the crowd. They then cut off their hair. The police came to know about the incident about 11.30 am and a team was rushed there.
"When policemen reached there, the villagers surrounded them and started hurling stones. Some vehicles were damaged and at least two policemen sustained minor injuries," said an officer.
Though the police managed to free the couple they could not take them out from the spot. Later the couple was taken to first a government school around 4 pm and then to the police station.
"We have registered two cases against the woman's husband, about six members of the panchayat and hundreds of villagers for attacking police team and outraging the modesty of the woman," said the officer.
When asked why the panchayat continued till late evening, SP Sharma said that they were trying to restore law and order. "We will soon arrest the accused villagers," he said.

The government should launch campaigns on the redundancy of such panchayats and urge people to seek the administration's help in case someone violates norms. CHANDIGARH: Four days after the gruesome murder of a woman by her husband and his paramour, Chandigarh witnessed another gory crime on Friday. A man tried to kill his estranged second wife before shooting himself with his country-made weapon in his car in Sector 44.

The deceased has been identified as Samoun Masie, 32, son of a retired Chandigarh Policeconstable and a resident of Baltana.

The second wife of deceased, Anita Nahar, had a narrow escape as the bullet brushed past her right shoulder. She was rushed to GMCH-32 and discharged after preliminary treatment.

The incident took place in Sector 44 around 8.15am when Anita along with her daughter, Enna, 11, was going to Chandigarh Baptist School, Sector 45, where she teaches and her daughter is a student. Enna is from Anita's first marriage.

Sources said Anita was upset with Samoun as he did not tell her that he was already married. She had also filed a complaint against him with women cell of Chandigarh Police four months ago. The deceased was living with his first wife Meenu and their six-year-old daughter. Incidentally, it was his daughter's birthday on Friday.

Eyewitnesses said Samoun shot at Anita, who was on a two-wheeler, from his car. Due to this Anita lost her balance and they fell. Thinking that she's dead, Samoun fled. Police said a few minutes later, Samoun was found dead in his car. A country made weapon along with two live cartridges was recovered from the car.

SHO of PS 34, Inspector Kirpal Singh said a case of attempt to murder was registered against Samoun Masie on Anita's statement. He said as Samoun is dead, the case will be filed in district court as untraced and an inquest proceeding was also initiated in this regard.

It was in 2009 when Samoun Masie met Anita at Chandigarh Baptist School in Sector 45, when the former used to drop his elder brother's kids to school. Anita was a schoolteacher. Sources said the couple wed in the Sector-24 church and began staying in a rented accommodation in Sector 44.

Things worsened six months ago when Anita came to know of Samoun's prior marriage. She complained to UT police, the couple separated and the woman shifted to her parental home. But, sources said Samoun started to SMS Anita's students, threatening them. Some messages contained objectionable text as well. A member of the school management said, "We summoned parents of these students and they were advised to guide their children not to entertain the SMSs. Police had been informed."

Though the man's first wife Meenu said she had no idea of Samoun's marriage to Anita, sources said the woman was aware but had adjusted to the circumstances. Samoun was the youngest of six brothers who stayed in a rented accommodation in Shiv Enclave, Baltana.

Man kills wife, drives with her in front seat for 3 hours Saurabh Prashar, TNN | Jul 18, 2012, 04.15AM IST

CHANDIGARH: A Chandigarh businessman strangulated his wife, put the dead body in the front seat of a car, fastened the seat belt, and drove for over three hours, covering a distance of over 100 kms, to dump the body in Hoshiarpur in Punjab.

And to be doubly-sure that she was dead he and his lover poured petrol over her body and set it afire before throwing the body in a ditch alongside a highway. The police have arrested Vajinder Singh, who they said had anextramarital relationship with Renu and wanted to move his wife out of the way. Renu has also been arrested for allegedly being an accomplice to the crime.

The body of Suresh Kumari alias Pooja has been recovered from a deserted forest area in Hoshiarpur district on Thursday. Vajinder is a manager with a franchise of Nik & Bakers in Sector 35 and was having an affair with Renu for the past three years. Vajinder and Pooja were married for around six years.

The murder took place on July 13 and the father-in-law of the deceased, Balwinder Pal, lodged amissing person complaint on the same day at the Sector 19 police station in Chandigarh.

The needle of suspicion turned towards Vajinder when Prem Chand, brother of Pooja, reported to the police that Vajinder had an affair with another woman and he suspected that Vajinder killed his sister. Chandigarh SSP Nau Nihal Singh said after getting the complaint Vajinder was picked up for questioning and he broke down and confessed his crime.

Vajinder Singh along with his paramour Renu allegedly murdered his wife after strangling her three times. Both of them first strangled her in Sector 9 and then put the body on the front seat of the car, holding it firmly with a seat belt. Then they drove with the body for more than 100km and dumped it after allegedly partially burning it in a deserted forest area of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Vajinder was demanding divorce from Pooja in order to marry Renu but the latter had declined to do so. It had resulted in more bitterness between the couple.

SSP (UT) Naunihal Singh said after getting the complaint, Vajinder was picked up for questioning and he reportedly confessed to his crime. His paramour Renu is a resident of Hoshiarpur district and Pooja's partially burnt body was recovered following Renu giving information about its location, the SSP added.

Police officials said, "Vajinder had given Pooja an intoxicant in a soft drink in the moving car on July 13. He then called Renu and the two strangled her in Sector 9. They started driving towards Hoshiapur but found on their way that Pooja was still alive. She was strangulated two times more on the way. The body was later set on fire and dumped."

Renu and Vajinder had worked together at a fast food chain in Jalandhar district three years ago, which is when their reported affair began. Renu is living in a paying guest accommodation in Sector 20, Chandigarh, though she hails from Hoshiarpur district.

After dumping the body in Hoshiarpur district, Renu stayed in her house in Hoshiarpur. She is married but has a matrimonial dispute with her husband.

Rescued from kidnappers, girl raped by cops in UP Pervez Iqbal Siddiqui, TNN | Jul 18, 2012, 03.57AM IST

LUCKNOW: A teenaged girl allegedly kidnapped by three men in Sitapur was reportedly recovered, detained illegally for five days and repeatedly raped by a policeman and a village chowkidar before being handed over to the family. Despite repeated complaints, police have turned a blind eye to the incident ever since it came to light about a month ago.
Police initiated some action last week after a similar incident was reported from the state capital last week in which the Lucknow bench of Allahabad high court took suo moto cognizance the media reports and summoned the Lucknow district police chief. However once the media focus shifted from the incident, the Sitapur police allegedly shelved the inquiry into the poor villager's complaint.
According to victim's father Rameshwar, his 16-year-old daughter Suntia (both names changed to conceal identity) was kidnapped by a local youth Rajnesh and his aides on April 2 this year. Rameshwar lodged a written complaint with the police the same day but no action was initiated against the accused till he approached the senior officers who directed the local Piswan police to register a case. Finally, an FIR was lodged with the Piswan police on April 8.
When no further action was taken, Rameshwar on June 3 threatened to immolate himself outside the police station. When the immolation threat appeared in the local media, senior officers directed the Piswan police to workout the case. As a result, Sunita who was untraceable since April, was recovered by sub-inspector (SI) Ram Prasad Premi, the investigating officer in the case within the next 48 hours (on June 5).
Rameshwar said on June 5 the village chowkidar reached his house and informed him that Sunita had been recovered. He accompanied the chowkidar to a location in another village from where Sunita was supposedly rounded up. Thereafter, Rameshwar, Sunita, the village chowkidar and the SI along with a constable started for the Piswan police station. Rameshwar said on the way, he was asked to get off the vehicle and reach the police station by himself.
For the next five days he kept on visiting the police station enquiring about his daughter only to sent back home on one pretext or the other. Once again it was only after Rameshwar threatened to immolate himself, that the village Chowkidar escorted the girl home. "Once she reached home she narrated her ordeal that she underwent first at the hands of the accused and then the SI and chowkidar," Rameshwar said.
Since then Rameshwar has been begging for justice but in vain. "When the Lucknow incident took place, they called me and recorded my statements. But a couple of days later, everything went quiet. This time, it will not be a mere threat but I will immolate myself and the Sitapur police will be solely responsible for it," Rameshwar told TOI.
Circle officer Mishrikh Vijay Tripathi, when contacted, feigned ignorance about any such complaint.
The police, however, are learnt to have developed a cold feet once queries were made by the media in connection with Rameshwar's complaint. Any inquiry into the complaint will land the Sitapur police in a big trouble because the police after tracing Sunita had not got her medical examination done and sent her home instead. This is a blatant violation of the procedure followed in a case of recovery of a kidnapped minor.
Now that Rameshwar has once again threatened to immolate himself, like Balram Prasad, the 80-year-old social worker who torched himself near the SP Azamgarh office on Monday, he is hopeful that some action will be initiated against the accused. In his suicide note, Balram had accused police of high handedness, prompting the senior officials to take up the case immediately.

Girl molested, police inactive Aneesha Sareen Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 15

Close on the heels of the molestation of a girl in Guwahati, which sent shock waves across the nation, a girl in the city was molested and chased by over a dozen rowdy youths outside Tao discotheque in Sector 26 last night.
Even 18 hours after the incident, the police failed to track down the youths though it had the vehicle registration number of the car in which the molesters escaped.
The assailants tried to molest other girls, who managed to flee. One of the girls, who went through the horror outside the discotheque last night, narrated the incident to the Chandigarh Tribune.
A written complaint, with the vehicle registration number of the molesters, was handed over to the police after the incident, but a daily diary report was not lodged.
As a mere formality, the investigating officer received her complaint and put July 17, a future date, on it.
The incident occurred when 25-year-old Neetu (name changed) came to the discotheque for a party.
She came out at 1:20 am when a dozen youths surrounded her as she was about to sit in her car. She worked with a software firm in the city.
"I came out and was about to sit in my car when over a dozen youths surrounded me. One of them molested me. As I cried for help, they passed obscene comments and hurled abuses at me," she said.
"There was no police official in sight. I was scared and managed to lock myself in my car. Three other girls came out and were similarly molested. They got scared and ran away," she added.
"I then called up the police control room and my boss. The youths kept knocking at the windowpanes. I was panic-stricken and could not even start my vehicle as they obstructed the way," she further said.
When the girl's boss arrived with his friend at the scene, the youths assaulted them. When a police control room vehicle team arrived near the Tao gate later, the youths fled in a white Verna car (PB23F-9757).
"I was accompanied by a policeman to the Sector-26 police station, where I lodged my complaint. No action has been taken so far. This is the height of insensitivity of the police. It is taking things too lightly," she said.

‘INVESTIGATION ON’
We have traced the number of the car to Fatehgarh Sahib. We will lodge a case once the accused are traced. We are investigating the matter.
— Inspector Anokh Singh, Sec-26 police station SHO

New born baby found abandoned at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital TNN | Jul 16, 2012, 12.25AM IST

COIMBATORE: A new-born baby girl was found abandoned at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Sunday after her mother left the hospital without informing the authorities. As per the hospital records, the child was born to Selvi, daughter of Perumal Sami of Iyampalayam, near Somanur in Coimbatore.
According to the police, the child was born on July 12 in a private hospital.
Selvi had a premature delivery and the child was underweight. Since the baby was in critical condition and the hospital didn't have proper facility for treatment, the baby was referred to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Selvi was admitted to the CMCH with her baby on July 14.
Since the child was much below the required weight, baby was kept in an incubator at CMCH for observation. On Sunday, the mother and her family let the hospital pretending that they are just going out for some needs, but never returned.
The police are now trying to trace the mother and another woman who was present at the hospital as bystander. We are not sure that the address given at the hospital is correct or not. We are investigating the case, the police said.
A senior doctor at the hospital said this was the third such incident this year in CMCH where mothers abandon their children. At least eight such cases were registered last year.
In such cases after registering complaints with social welfare department and police the child will be handed over to orphanages or child care centres.
It has been noticed that most of who abandon their children at hospital are from poor families.

BANGALORE: Close on the heels of a Class V school girl being made to drink her urine as punishment for bedwetting in West Bengal, a woman here has accused her dentist husband of a similar charge and also sexually abusing her for dowry.

The 26-year-old woman lodged a complaint, alleging that her Udupi-based dentist husband was harassing her for dowry by sexually abusing her and forcing her to drink her own urine, police said.

The couple got married about 11 months back, but the woman is now living separately with her brother, they said, adding that the accused has been arrested on July 12 and is being questioned, they said.

Uma Poddar, a warden of Karabi girls' hostel under Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal, was arrested by police and later suspended by the varsity for compelling a ten-year-old girl student to drink her own urine as a punishment for bed-wetting on July 8. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights had slapped a notice on the West Bengal government, asking it to probe the matter and submit a report in 10 days.
