Of late, I have been witnessing a very disturbing increase in the crime against females, be a girl child, a teenager, or an adult woman. It has almost become the order of the day. Newspapers are replete with such news. No doubt, India has been placed at parity with Afghanistan as the worst countries for a female to born in. Sometimes, I guess, had it been there in the past too but very less reported?.. or the mind set of the Indian male is becoming less human, devoid of any compassion and respect for the other gender, and is also becoming fearless of the Indian Law!
So, I fancied an idea to let the world know the dark side of "Being a Female in India."
Let there be the consciences shaken, people of all walks do some soul searching..take a pause and raise their voice, wherever they are, against the atrocities being meted out to girls and women, with a result that cruelity against the female gender starts receding, and we give to our generations to come a society where a woman is respected in its true essence-as as wife, as a sister, as a mother, as a grand mother et al..is the sole objective of this blog.
Amen.

Disabled athletics champ raped by auto driver Subhro Maitra, TNN | Jun 27, 2012, 06.33AM IST

MALDA: A national champion, hailed as a 'pride of Bengal' , was kidnapped by an autorickshaw driver, who took advantage of her speech and hearing disability to lock her up in a room and rape her all of Sunday night. The victim escaped at dawn and wandered about in a state of shock before a policeman handed her a pen and paper to write down her ordeal. She is the reigning champion in 200-metres sprint and has won several medals for the state in disabled athletics. She was also feted as a role model for the state by the governor last year. It is yet another shameful incident for Bengal after the Park Street rape and the rape of a homemaker by aKolkata taxi driver

Unable to scream for help, the 25-year-old was helpless as the auto driver drove her to a mango orchard instead of taking her to her home and allegedly raped her there. He then dragged her to his home and raped her repeatedly through the night. The prime suspect, Ranjit Das, was arrested within hours and is now in jail custody

Police say the girl took an auto from Raiganj to her village, Islampore, around 14km away, on Sunday afternoon. On arriving there, she found she did not have the change to pay the fare. Unable to explain herself clearly , she could not get out of a quarrel with the auto-driver . Ranjit, who was hanging around the auto stand, realized the girl's disabilities and posed as her saviour . He sorted out the dispute and offered to drop her home, but took her to his village, Baruipur , instead.

The victim is the reigning champion in 200-metre sprint at the national games for the disabled and has won several medals for the state She was feted as a "role model for the state" by the governor last year Her attacker exploited her disabilities to drag her to his village and rape her through the night

She broke out of his clutches at dawn and wandered aimlessly for hours before some neighbours spotted her. She looked traumatized but could not explain why she was in that state. Thankfully, someone called police. When Hemtabad OC Abhijit Dutta realized that it was the champion athlete, he personally rushed to her and escorted her to the police station . She wrote down details of the incident. "Based on her written complaint we raided Ranjit's house and arrested him. The victim was sent to Raiganj hospital for medical tests, which have corroborated her statement," Dutta said. Ranjit was produced in court on Tuesday and remanded in jail.

Last year, the athlete was honoured by the state government as a 'role model' . "She is our pride. We will do everything we can to help her fight against the odds," said Hemtabad block development officer Subhrajit Gupta.

She is from a very poor family and was fostered in a social welfare home till the age of 18. It was there that her talent for athletics was discovered and she was encouraged to take part in district-level competitions . Soon, she was winning medals at the state level and was chosen to represent Bengal in the national games for the disabled. She is hoping to take the Madhyamik next year. West Bengal Pratibandhi Sammilani general secretary Kanti Ganguly, a former Left Front minister, alleged that the local police had "come under pressure from several quarters in this case" . "However , the officer in charge of Hemtabad took the right step," Ganguly said, demanding exemplary punishment for the culprit.

NRI in Canada asked to pay alimony to estranged wife in India PTI | Jun 22, 2012, 04.34PM IST

NEW DELHI: A non-resident Indian has been asked by a Delhi court to pay an alimony of Rs 33,000 a month to his estranged wife living here.
Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Ila Rawat ordered Puneet Arora, residing in Canada with his parents and sister, to pay maintenance to his wife from January 2010 when she had moved the court for the alimony.
The sessions court's order came on the woman's plea for modification of a magisterial court order, which had allowed her an alimony of Rs 33,000 a month but had slated the date of its payment from August 5, 2011, the day the trial court had given its ruling.
"The respondent no. 1 (Puneet) is directed to pay Rs 33,000 per month towards maintenance and for rent amount to his wife (the petitioner) from the date of filing the application," said ASJ Rawat, slating the 10th day of every month as the date for payment of the alimony.
In her plea, the woman had said she was married to Puneet on September 15, 2009 with her parent giving sufficient dowry to him as per his family's demand.
She said Puneet left for Canada after a fortnight of his marriage and when she joined him after five months after grant of visa, she was not treated properly and was not given the status of wife.
She said her in-laws and husband threatened, harassed, tortured, taunted and even beat her up despite receiving ample amount of dowry from her parents.
She also alleged that her husband was having an extra marital affair with a divorced woman in Canada and with whom she had seen him in objectionable position.
Ultimately, she was forced to leave Canada on December 7, 2009 and took shelter at her parental home in India without any monetary help from her husband for her maintenance and day to day expenses, she said.

This is one of the many true stories; newspapers are full with it. Heartening to see that Indian Court has ordered the alimony to be paid to the wife. Though, I feel very sorry for the wife. With what dreams she moved to Canada only to see her husband having an affair, and her in-laws maltreating her! A life has been devastated here, anyways.

Pipili 'rape' points to pitiable state of women Rajaram Satapathy | Jun 22, 2012, 05.31AM IST

BHUBANESWAR: Just when Odisha was in a festive mood on Thursday, the SCB Medical College and Hospital announced the death ofBabina Behera, drawing curtains on the suffering of the 19-year old dalit girl from Pipli. She endured her suffering silently for nearly seven months since she was allegedly subjected to rape and then attempts of murder through strangulation.
The crime against Babina was said to be linked to her being the key witness in a molestation case involving her next-door friend, who later committed suicide, in the village. The miscreants reportedly wanted to silence Babina once and for all. They succeeded to a large extent as the teenager till her death remained in a coma, but the incident brought to the fore the degree of helplessness people not close to the corridors of power can pass through.
The follow-up developments like police refusing to accept the FIR, hospitals not showing much interest in her treatment, doctors administering snake bite medicines, reported attempts of shielding the criminals and threats to her family and attempts to tarnish her image ostensibly to defend the crime are cited as pointers to the pitiable state of affairs of women victims in the state.
The Pipli incident would have perhaps melted into thin air like many others, but for some civil society activists who took up the case for justice leading to intense public outcry, which was never seen since the sensational Anjana Mishra gang rape incident in early 1999.
The ensuing protests shook the government. Agriculture minister and local BJD MLA Pradeep Maharathy was forced to resign, while the beleaguered government announced a judicial inquiry. The SCB Medical College, which once discharged the girl even when she was battling for life, had to readmit her for treatment, thanks to the intervention of the high court. The inspector in-charge of Pipli police station, Amulya Champatiray, was first suspended and then dismissed. The district SP, A N Sinha, was transferred as the government handed over the investigation to the Crime Branch.
The Babina episode also caught the attention of the National Commission for Scheduled Caste (NCSC), which visited the state and recommended Maharathy's arrest. As the probe progressed, the Crime Branch filed chargesheets implicating the superintendent of the SCB Medical College and Hospital and two doctors of the Capital Hospital here.
No sooner the SCB made public Babina's death, chief minister Naveen Patnaik announced Rs 10 lakh compensation to her family. The Cuttack collector rushed to the hospital to hand over the cheque even while the family members were still undecided where to take the body for cremation. "I have lost my daughter. I hope justice will be done to her. Let the case be handed over to the CBI for investigation," Babina's father Babuli Behera said.
In Bhubaneswar, several political parties and Odisha Gana Samaj, the organization floated recently comprising people from all walks of life and political parties, demanded justice for the girl and staged a road blockade at Master Canteen square. They echoed the demand for CBI inquiry and Rs 50 lakh compensation to the families of Babina and her deceased friend. The protesters also demanded murder charges against all the accused. The Bhubaneswar policesensing trouble refused to allow the vehicle carrying the girl's body into central areas of the city and diverted it to her village near Pipli for cremation.

Married man kills lover, burns her body Raj Shekhar, TNN | Jun 21, 2012, 02.11AM IST

NEW DELHI: A 30-year-old married businessman, who wanted to get rid of his girlfriend, allegedly strangled her, stuffed her body in a suitcase and took it to Haryana where he burnt it, police said. However, his return to his flat to wipe out evidence proved to be his undoing. A neighbour had spotted him when he was leaving to dump the body and informed the police. They were waiting for him. The incident took place on Tuesday in Rohini area of northwest Delhi. The businessman, identified asUmakant Pandit alias Anil, dealt in garments and was smitten with the woman, identified asRachna (24), who too was married. The police are also looking for a man, identified as Sumit, who allegedly helped the accused in the murderand disposal of the body. They have reportedly recovered half of Rachna's burnt body from the spot and are trying to find out if the accused cut the body into parts before burning it. Pandit allegedly told the cops that he had got into a relationship with Rachna, who was his employee at his garment factory about a year ago. "He had been living with her for the past seven months at a flat in Rohini. Lately, he says, she had become a problem for him as she had started to 'expect' too much and therefore he hatched a plan to eliminate her," said a senior police officer. "On Monday, he bought a red suitcase and consumed liquor at night. In the morning, around 9:30am, he strangled Rachna. We suspect he cut the body into two parts to stuff it into the suitcase. During the day, he didn't get a chance to dispose of the body and it was only around 11pm that he and his friend left the Rohini flat. They took the body to a desolate spot near Rasoi village, on the Panipat highway, and poured five litres of petrol on the suitcase before setting it on fire. Pandit later dropped Sumit at Ashok Vihar around 2.30am, parked his car in Rithala and went home," the officer added. The police said they had received a call from a neighbour at 11.20pm that there may be a body in a red Alto. "We rushed to the spot but the two had left. Pandit and Sumit had been seen dragging a red coloured bag on the staircase. The eyewitness said he had seen blood dripping from the bag. They were apparently wearing gloves. During inspection of the suspected scene of crime, bloodstains were detected on the floor of the flat and there was a foul smell inside the room," said Tajinder Luthra, Joint CP, Northern Range. The eyewitness got suspicious because of a foul smell. When he noticed bloodstains on the stairs, he dialled 100 even as they were heading for their car. He gave the registration number of the car to the cops who obtained the address of the owner and raided a house in Sultanpuri. It turned out that Pandit had sold off the house. Addl DCP P Karunakaran said, "A team of officers, led by SHO South Rohini, Jai Prakash, was deployed in the area in outer Delhi to nab the accused. One team was stationed around Kumar's original house where his wife and children lived and another around the scene of crime." Pandit returned to wipe out evidence, including bloodstains and photographs inside the house, and walked straight into the arms of the police.

According to the local medical authorities, members of some communities, infamous for killing baby girls, have now found a new way to make the deaths look 'natural'. The baby girls are either not fed enough or denied treatment. The authorities came across three such cases in Tejmalta and Mandi villages of the district during the last 10 days.
On Friday, Dileep Singh was arrested after his daughter, who was born on June 13, died in the absence of proper treatment. According to SP Mamta Vishnoi, SDM Fatehgarh has submitted a report to Sangad police station in this regard, following which a case was registered and action was taken. A special team recovered the body of the baby for post-mortem.
Vishnoi said investigation into the case revealed that Singh did not make any efforts to save the child. "During the investigation, contradictory information came to light pointing that Singh was completely careless towards his daughter. He was arrested on Friday and sent to judicial custody on Saturday,'' added Vishnoi.
In last 10 days, three newborn girls died suspiciously in the area. According to reports, Keku Kanwar delivered a healthy baby at Tejmalta on June 8 but was brought to the Jhinjhinyali primary health centre in serious condition the next day. The baby did not survive. On the same day, the death of yet another baby girl was reported, following which the entire family is missing.
District collector Shuchi Tyagi accepted the fact that some people are deliberately resorting to inhuman methods in order to save themselves from the law. Tyagi said it is a planned conspiracy and of the three recent cases, the newborns were buried in the backyard of the house. They also use chemical or salt so that body gets destroyed quickly. "The reasons could not be found in the post-mortem. Therefore, viscera has been sent to FSL for investigation and after the report comes, the reasons of death would be known. We are also talking to experts about what can be done to avoid such incidents,'' she said.

Minor raped in Barabanki, girl in Jhansi kills self TNN | Jun 20, 2012, 03.05AM IST

LUCKNOW: An eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered in Dewa policecircle of Barabanki, located barely 20 kilometres from the state capital. In another incident reported from Jhansi, a 13-year-old girl committed suicide after she was held captive and repeatedly raped by a local youth. Both the incidents came to light on Tuesday.
Reports from Barabanki said the incident came to light on Tuesday morning after the body of a minor girl - aged around 8 years was recovered from a field in Mamapur village under Dewa police circle. The girl was later identified as Munni of the same village. Prima facie, the condition of the body suggested that the minor had been sexually assaulted and then strangulated.
After the victim's parents told the police that the girl had gone missing since early evening on Monday and was last seen with a local youth Bhanu Yadav who too was found missing till late on Monday night, police raided Bhanu's house and nabbed him. Though the accused tried to wriggle out of the dragnet on the pretext that he had nothing to do with the girl and had not met her for more than 2 days, he gave in after he was confronted by some local residents who had met Bhanu, while the victim was with him.
In Jhansi, the suicide by a 13-year-old girl, that took place on Sunday, turned out to be a result of rape. After sexual assault was established in the post-mortem examination on Monday, the victim's family members admitted that the girl had told them about what all had happened to her before she consumed poison on Sunday.
A resident of Dubki village in Babina area, this student of class VII was attending stitching classes at a nearby village as it was her summer vacation time. The only child of her parents, her father was employed in Delhi and the girl lived with her mother in Dubki. The victim left her house on Saturday morning at the usual time to attend her stitching classes, but went missing thereafter. When she failed to turn up by late evening, her mother went out looking for her only to learn that she had left her stitching classes at the usual time in afternoon.
The girl however reached home on Sunday morning in a visibly shaken state and told her mother that she was on her way home when a local youth Gaya Prasad alias Raja Ahirwar kidnapped her. He held her captive in a house situated in a deserted corner of the village and repeatedly raped her all through the night. The girl somehow managed to escape from the confinement after the accused went to sleep early in the morning.
Even before the victim's mother could decide what to do next, the girl reportedly went inside a small store room in the house and consumed poison. She died by the time any medical help could be provided to her. Police have arrested the accused. The police have also charged the accused of compelling the victim to commit suicide apart from rape and assault.

Woman promised job, 'raped' for 5 days Sanjay Yadav, TNN | Jun 20, 2012, 01.35AM IST

GURGAON: The Badshapur police have lodged an FIR against a man who allegedly raped a woman of his village for five successive days in his rented accommodation in Gurgaon after promising her a job in the city. A medical examination has confirmed the victim's rape. The accused, however, is on the run.

According to the police, 23-year-old girl Priya (name changed), a native of Hisar and married to a native of Bhiwani, had got in touch with Naresh, a resident of her village, Ghamana, last month, as she was looking for a job. Naresh, who was working in Gurgaon and was living in a rented accommodation in Begampur Khatola village, promised to get her a job in the city.

On May 18, the accused allegedly called the victim and told her that he had found a job for her in a reputable company in Sector 73, Gurgaon. The interview, Naresh said, was scheduled for May 19. But when she reached Gurgaon, Naresh took her to his Begampur Khatola room and on the pretext that the interview has been postponed he raped her for five days.

Girl 'raped' in taxi, dumped on road TNN | Jun 20, 2012, 03.30AM IST

BARASAT: A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped inside a taxi and dumped near the Kolkata airport in the wee hours of Tuesday. The girl was unconscious when police rescued hear from near the boundary wall of the airport. It took her a while to regain sufficient consciousness and tell the police that a youth named Monu, a friend of her brother-in-law, had offered her a ride in a taxi and then misbehaved with her.
The incident follows close on the heels of the rape of a homemaker in Rajarhat by the driver of a luxury taxi. On June 9, the woman was offered a ride to Sealdah station by the driver from near the Exide crossing. Instead of driving to Sealdah, the driver drove to Rajarhat and raped the woman. He was arrested within hours.
In Tuesday's case, the accused is yet to be traced. Though the 15-year-old girl and her mother refused a medical examination, the police have registered a case of rape against Monu, based on her version. As the girl is still unable to give a full account of what actually happened, officers aren't sure whether Monu is a taxi driver or hired the cab. Even the victim'a mother, a resident of Paschim Beraberi in the Airport police station area, wasn't able to shed much light into the identity of the accused.
"A police patrol from Madhyamgram spotted the girl lying unconscious near the airport wall at Narayanpur. They picked her up and got her admitted to the Barasat Hospital. Throughout the day, the girl flitted from consciousness to unconsciousness and her complete statement could not be recorded," an officer said.
According to him, the girl developed a relationship with the youth during her visits to her sister's house at Belgachia. Even her mother or other relatives weren't aware of the relationship. On Monday evening, the youth seemed to have offered her a ride in a taxi. The two travelled to several locations across the city. On the way to drop her back home, Monu is suspected to have raped her.
"We suspect that she was raped in the taxi. Though a medical examination could not be conducted, we have registered a case of rape based on her complaint. If the victim is not ready to undergo a medical examination, we can't force her. We have begun a search for Monu. We have also alerted all police stations along the border to keep a lookout for him as he may try to leave the country," said Champak Bhattacharya, SP, North 24-Parganas.
Even if the medical examination is not held, the police hope to get vital clues once Monu is held. According to an officer, it makes no difference whether the girl knew Monu or not. He will be charged if the girl alleges sexual assault even if it is found that they were having an affair.

Diplomat accused of raping daughter 16 Jun 2012, 0920 hrs IST, AGENCIES

The wife of the French diplomat, who has been accused of raping his three-and-a half year-old daughter, has appealed to the Government to ensure that the official faces trial in India even if he enjoys diplomatic immunity. In a letter to Home Minister P Chidambaram and External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, Suja Jones Mazurier has requested that her husband, Pascal Mazurier, be restrained from leaving the country till legal proceedings were completed and that under no circumstance should he be allowed custody of their children, who are French nationals.

Asha S Basu, counsel for Suja Jones Mazurier, who has written the letters on her behalf, sought protection for her client and her children. Suja Jones also wanted the French Embassy to be directed to help her with legal and financial assistance, as she was currently unemployed and has to take care of their children. Suja Jones, an Indian citizen, said she is married to Pascal Mazurier, Deputy Head of Chancery in the Consulate of France, Bangalore and have three children- a seven year-old son, the victim and a 20-month-old son.

She said apart from High Grounds police station here registering a case of rape against the diplomat, in view of the "medical evidence", the Baptist hospital, Bangalore has also registered a medico-legal case against him. Suja Jones said she has already written to the Ambassador of France intimating the details of alleged domestic violence and repeated child abuse.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) Suneel Kumar said "the victim (the daughter) has been taken to Government-run Bowring Hospital for a medical examination. The medical report will take some time". However, he said the police are checking the status of the diplomat with the Union Government to decide on future course of action. DCP (Central Division) Ravikante Gowda said the diplomat was just questioned and sent back to his consulate, adding, "if necessary, we will question him again."

Barely alive, Rohini sisters rescued from home Dwaipayan Ghosh, TNN | Jun 17, 2012, 04.17AM IST

NEW DELHI: The middle class neighbourhood of Rohini's Sector VIII woke up on Saturday to a shocking story of neglect and social apathy. Two sisters - allegedly suffering from depression and malnutrition for months with their bodies having started to rot - were sent to hospital by one of their relatives who stays in the area after the stench from the house became unbearable. How the 65-year-old mother of the two women and her grandson, 14-years-old, managed to live in these conditions without seeking help is a mystery.

The neighbours admitted that they chose to ignore the screams and stench for over two years believing that "the matter did not concern them.'' And on Saturday morning, they came to know the truth only through television.

Doctors at Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital said the two sisters, one 40-year-old and the other 29-year-old, were admitted between 11.40 am and 1.40 pm. "A CAT ambulance brought the elder sister to the hospital at 11.40 am. A look at her and the foul smell from her body shocked us. She was infected with maggots and had bed sores all over. It seemed she had been completely neglected for at least the past four months, and though she did consume some food, the quantity must have been very less. She had developed contractions due to non-movement of limbs and weighed hardly more than 15 kg and resembled nothing more than a skeleton,'' said a doctor at the casualty who first examined her.

Another doctor, Kaustuv Kiran, said he was unable to even record her blood pressure as the normal instruments proved too big for her arms. ``Her hair was unkempt and she had huge nails. She groaned with pain every time we touched her. She also had several infected wounds that can be critical for her. We have formed a team of doctors from the medicine, surgery and orthopaedics departments who will monitor her. We have dressed her after washing her up and are most likely to put her on drip. She is conscious though but semi-oriented,'' said Dr Kiran.

The doctors said the condition of the younger sister was comparatively better. "She has flexation reformity (non-movement of limbs) from around her limbs. She is able to talk to us too. She has been insisting that her mother and her nephew (son of the elder sister) were taking good care of her. We think she too needs counselling which will begin soon,'' added Dr Kiran. The delay in bringing the two sisters, explained doctors, was due to the younger sister's insistence that she was ``absolutely normal and needed no medical attention.'' The CAT ambulance staff had to forcefully remove her from her bed, said a police source.

The neighbours claimed they were woken up by an animated discussion between the mother and her nephew on Friday night around 11 pm. ``It was evident that the condition of the sisters had deteriorated. In the morning, they called CAT and took them to the hospital,'' said a neighbour.

Sources said the elder sister had married 18 years ago but got divorced within the next two years. Her husband did try to establish contact with their son but she put her foot down claiming he was alcoholic. Her sister never got married.

According to neighbours, the elder sister first got bedridden six years ago but no one had any idea about the exact cause. Till about two years ago, she was often heard screaming - and as her neighbours claimed - even swearing at them. However that too stopped. The child who attended a local government school too seemed to have been pulled out this year.

For the past four months, the only person who came out of the house was the mother. She told doctors she lived on monetary support from her husband's four brothers but since the death of her husband five years ago, that help too has been slowly drying up."The brothers did not visit them in the past six months and the nephew visited once in a while,'' said a neighbour.

Joint commissioner (Northern Range) Tajender Luthra said they have been informed by the hospital of the incident. No case has been registered so far.

The incident, coming after similar incidents were reported from Kalkaji in southeast Delhi and Noida in the past five years, has once again exposed the callousness of a city where there is little time for neighbours to care for each other. And all claims of NGOs and beat constables that they take care of the weak, old and destitute sound quite hollow.

Neighbours chose to ignore stench

The stench outside the sisters' Rohini residence is hard to miss. And so is their neighbours' indifference. Hours after the malnourished women were taken to Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, most residents in the vicinity preferred to maintain a safe distance from the media.

"I moved in barely one year ago. I do not know much about the people here," a resident told TOI. Even the RWA president P P Kaushik denied having much knowledge regarding the sisters. "I came to the locality five years ago. I have often encountered their mother in the area. She used to enquire about pending bills and complained of the high electricity tariff. But I have never seen either of the two sisters. We had heard that they having some mental trouble but we didn't know the magnitude of the problem," said Kaushik.

However, the sisters' immediate neighbours were more forthcoming. "We have seen them here for the past 16 years. The elder sister, who stayed on the ground floor, used to scream and even swear at us. But this was about two years ago. We haven't seen any doctor attending to them. In fact, we haven't seen them open the gate in the past four months. What's worse is that they stopped the 14-year-old from attending school or even play with children in the neighbourhood. Their mother (65) used to visit often. She watered the plants outside their residence and kept them in excellent shape,'' said a neighbour.

On asking others in the colony why didn't they alert the police earlier since the stench was becoming unbearable, one of the men retorted, "We do not want to be seen as pesky neighbours who interfere in others' lives. Another neighbour claimed that he had often heard arguments between the mother and daughters, but the tiffs didn't strike him as 'unnatural'. "I assumed that the sisters' condition must have deteriorated but didn't share the thought with others," he said.

Suresh Kumar Gupta, an RWA member said he was aware that the sisters hadn't stepped out of the house in four months. "We thought it was a family decision,'' said Gupta. Even with the mother, his conversation was limited to matters concerning the RWA.

We are not living in a jungle where animals have their territories demarcated and one dares not to venture out in another's, but we, human beings, live in a society where we ought to have the know if something bad or strange is happening in one' neighbourhood. In this case, had the neighbours taken an active interest the sisters would not have suffered this much.
